On the subject of Round Robins (RR) - Update 2

Journal Entry: Tue Apr 27, 2010, 1:50 PM
Hi again, folks! :wave:

Update April 30, 2010:

Thank you for your comments and questions.
Sorry, I missed out a lot of things. I was half asleep when updating this blog yesterday. :sleep:

First of all, I think, we need to make sure that people will not have any problems with the params. Simple Apo (not 3D, please, and not 7X). If you use any outside plugins, please make sure you point out which ones and where they can be downloaded. But please keep the outside plugins to a minimum to avoid the hassle.

We will not divide people by experience. I think it will be a great opportunity to learn new things in UF as well. Masking permitted, but not mapping (one step at a time, please); 3 layers maximum (excluding masking) for the starting params; no outside images, textures or formulas that are not included in the public database, to be used. It should be based on default programme settings, preferably fitting both UF4 and UF5.

Unfortunately I do not know anything about FE, but please make it as simple as possible. I would like to ask Mario :iconmario837: to create 2 params for FE, because so far we have only two people participating in FE group. If no more peeps join, you and :iconmookiezoolook: will have to work in pair ;)

I would like to make it themed, but it's probably too much to ask from some of the newbies. So, no theme this time, but make it fit for the current season - fresh and colourful, if possible.

Maybe it will be too simple for the advanced users, but we would like newbies to learn things from you guys. ;)

All of you, who who would like to donate params, please send in just one for each programme via a note. I think we have enough peeps to create a nice collection. I will collect them and send them to the participants via a note when RR begins.

We were planning to launch the challenge on Tuesday, May 4. So, the params should be in by Monday midnight Greenwich Mean Time. If that's too soon, please note me. Also, the enrolment ends Monday midnight GMT.

I hope I covered it all this time. I'm off to work now. :wave:

Update: April 29, 2010

Thank you all who responded to our idea and also thank you all for suggestions. We would like to make it as simple as possible. I was thinking about RR for Apo, UF, FE and maybe Incendia.

Now, first of all, we need to know how many people can participate in each of those. So, please respond either via a note to myself :iconliuanta: or leave a comment here as to which programme you intend to use in RR (or maybe all of them? ;)). I already have several peeps, who would be able to participate in Apo, UF and FE RR's.
Apo: :iconliuanta::iconheavenriver::iconsweetmaryfractals::iconnightmares06::iconnazre:
UF: :iconliuanta::iconlaxmijayaraj::iconheavenriver::iconkendra21::icondee-dee-blue:
FE: :iconmario837:

Anyone else?

Second, we need params donated. Preferably, 2-3 for each of the programs. Who can do that? You may start sending the params via a note to either myself, or to :iconlaxmijayaraj:, or to :iconheavenriver:

Third, the simplest way, is just to organise people into groups according to the programme used and provide them with the set of params.

Fourth, to make sure, people are not stressed, give them a week (maybe less) for tweaking any one or all of the given params.

Fifth, at the end of the Round 1 organise a lottery, so that each participant in a group would receive someone else's params to tweak further in Round 2, etc.

Did I miss anything? Please, comment.

April 27, 2010:

As I see, the majority of peeps don't know what Round Robin is. I guess it's time to explain, and maybe more of you will want to join or even make suggestions on how to involve those peeps, who are using fractal programs other than UF or Apo. I would like as many members as possible to get involved, because this is fun! :dance:

I never participated in RR myself, so those of you folks, who know exactly how it works, correct me if I'm wrong and feel free to add and answer any questions I may be unable to answer. I'm not omniscient, you know ;)

Originally ROUND ROBIN describes correspondence to a single address authored or signed by numerous individuals. Colloquially it's quite the opposite - a letter with an author copied and sent to multiple recipients.

So, what is Round Robin in fractal world? A Round Robin is when you are provided with a set of UF parameters, APO Flame, or FE Spot (however, I have no idea how to extract parameters from FE. Any help?). Then you paste the parameters, flame or spot into your program, tweak it (whether with limitations or without, depending on the RR rules) and then post it. Then you have to send your parameters to another person who is participating, and they do the same thing with them. As the parameters get passed around, everyone can see how they were changed and possibly learn something new. ;) So, the end result is totally different from the starting parameters. You can tweak, use scripts, maps, etc....but the parameters, flame, or spot still has to be usable by the next person. So, before passing on to the next person, make sure you didn't include any outside images (UF) or plugins (Apo) that another person may not have at hand. I hope this explains it.

Now, for the boring bit - before the RR challenge we need to make several lists (for separate programs, like UF, Apo, Apo 3D, FE, etc.) of participants who want to enrol. I hope, those of you who are using FE or some other programs and who are able to extract parameters, flames or whatever there is, will help me in organising a RR challenge for them as well.

Here's a sample of one of the Round Robins in UF (couldn't find the starting params though):
1st result: :thumb112783590: 2nd result: Round Robin Ultra Fractal by Kattvinge 3rd result: Round Robin Ultra Fractal by genlisae
Didn't find the rest of the steps, but I hope you get the idea.

So, what do you think, peeps? :D I need your help on other fractal programs, if possible. Thank youuuu! :hug:

Have a great sunny blooming week! :airborne:
